We have however observed a DRASTIC CHANGE OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS and one now finds that English is understood and spoken much more fluently.
Our personal advice, though: give French a try. You’ll see that it really helps if you are perceived to try to speak the language. And it will definitely be a good laugh!
