Fontainebleau
Another Royal Palace and UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by what is still the largest forest in France, Fontainebleau was the favorite holiday residence for the French kings from early XVIth century onwards. http://www.musee-chateau-fontainebleau.fr/ (site only in French) 1 hour from Paris: It is advised to spend 2 or 3 nights in Fontainebleau to really get the feel of being away, visit the palace, check out the traditional weekly market as well as one of the best cheese shops in France, enjoy the forest, take a boat ride on the Seine and maybe drive out to the medieval city of Provins for an afternoon.
Fontainebleau is particularly recommended for those traveling with children who can enjoy outdoors activities such as forest accrobranches, pony riding or bouldering for elder children and adults. Fontainebleau boasts of a superb golf course, right in the middle of the forest. It is listed in the top 100 golf courses in the world by Golf Digest.
Provins
Just 45 minutes from Fontainebleau (1 ½ hours from Paris), is the medieval city of Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage town, dating back to early IXth Century. A medieval city is always a very special experience. Walk around the fortifications to imagine the guards on their rounds. Visit the secret mysterious underground passageways and spend some time discovering ancient manuscripts and illuminated texts. Children will particularly enjoy the medieval shows: “The Eagles of the Ramparts”, “The Battle of the Ramparts” or “The Legend of the Knights.”
